Mpesa is a prolific money transfer service by Safaricom and popular among many Kenyans and since the launch it has made things simple.
Everything comes with its disadvantages and with this popular platform cons have found a way of slicing off people’s income. Mpesa agents are new target since most are not well secured but known to have huge sums of cash. Break-ins were once a trend but criminals have resulted to use their intellect.
From this method, A con walks to Mpesa then pretends to be depositing huge amount of cash that an agent will not resist. They will give out cash amounting even up to to Ksh 40,000. The agent checks if it is counterfeit and none of the notes is. Suddenly, they have a change of mind and decide to withdraw the cash. After some discussion a story of a sudden appearance of someone in need makes them change their mind and want to deposit the cash.
The agent is now convinced that the cash they have is theirs and doesn’t take time to check if it is counterfeit. The agent accepts the deposit and the cons give away fake notes then leave. The helpless agent realizes fake notes later.
This con has several variants, check out the video below to check how similar happened and agents went untracable.
